Preparing a will – dos and don’ts
Preparing a will can be a lengthy and confusing ordeal. While it
is possible to do it yourself, and there are many books and
websites which claim to help in preparing a will, ideally you will
consult a solicitor, even if only to have them check over a will
you have prepared and ensure that it is legally binding.
Preparing a will with the help of a legal expert can help make
sure you don't make any small mistakes that could have enormous
repercussions, and can also reduce the amount of inheritance tax
that is taken out of your estate before it is passed on to your
beneficiaries.
Before preparing a will, you will need to choose an executor,
someone trustworthy who will be responsible for ensuring that
everyone named in the will receives whatever was left to them. You
will also need to compile a list of all the property you own, and a
description of your financial situation, including savings,
investments, debts, mortgages and so on.
