Should you make your own will?
Making your will can be a daunting idea, and with solicitors'
fees on top of that, it's no wonder there are so many websites
offering to help you make your own will.
The idea is appealing, of course - make the process easy and
cheap so you can ensure you have your own will completed as soon as
possible, and do not have to worry about it any more. But are these
make-your-own-will services everything they're cracked up to
be?
It may be viable to make your own will if your affairs and
inheritance are fairly simple. Make-your-own-will services will
easily satisfy your needs, but you should still have the will
checked by a solicitor or other legal consultant afterwards in
order to make sure that you haven't made any mistakes that could
prove to be costly for your loved ones down the line.
If your financial situation is more complex, attempting to make
your own will is less advisable. If, for example, you own your own
business, have children from a previous marriage, or anything else
that might complicate your inheritance, it is best not to make your
own will but instead consult a solicitor to help you draft your
will and translate your wishes into the necessary legal
terminology. It needn't be that expensive and there is help
available for you if you do not feel you can afford the fees.
