Should you make a will online?
Making a will is hard enough as it is - the subject matter is
grim and it can involve considerable thinking. Adding lengthy and
expensive consultations with a solicitor on top of that appeals to
few, so it's no wonder so many people are choosing to make a will
online.
But is it safe to make a will online?
When you go to make a will online, you'll often be provided with
templates and instructions. Unfortunately, these can only go so far
in explaining the legal terminology involved - otherwise we'd all
be legal experts! The problem when trying to make a will online,
then, is that a small misunderstanding or mistake on your part can
easily escalate into great misfortune for your beneficiaries after
you pass away.
It may be viable to make a will online if your affairs are
simple, but even then it should be looked at by a solicitor to
ensure it will stand up as a legal document. If you are concerned
about the costs, bear in mind that if you are on low income or
above a certain age you may be entitled to legal aid.
Ultimately, while it may be tempting to make a will online, it
is far too important a document to trust exclusively to the
information you can find on the web. It may be a good starting
point, but at some point it is essential that you seek legal
advice.
