Petrol prices in the UK at 15-month high

Motorists face further misery this winter

By Elliot Wright, 6th January 2010

Snow won't be the only thing giving motorists a tough time this winter as average UK petrol prices broke the £5 a gallon barrier for the first time in over year, and are due to climb even higher, according to the AA.

The average pump price of petrol rose to 110.04p a litre yesterday compared to 85.99p a year ago. Diesel now costs 111.77p, up from 98.06p last year.

The extra 24.05p-a-litre cost of petrol has added £12.02 to the cost of a tank of petrol and a family with two petrol cars is now paying £52.15 more a month to keep them fuelled.

The soaring cost of petrol and diesel has been mainly attributed to the price of oil, which is now above $80 a barrel. While recent rises in fuel duty and VAT have also helped push the price of petrol up by an average of 6.81p-a-litre.

And with the taxman set to raise fuel duty again by at least 2p a litre in April, motorists are set for months of petrol price misery.

Paul Watters, the AA's head of public affairs said: "The return to 17.5% VAT on 1 January 2010 wasn't evenly applied, with some supermarkets raising prices 2p a litre and others 3p depending on local competition. We were impressed that some independent petrol stations held their prices or undercut local supermarkets during the New Year holiday.

"The fact that petrol sales by supermarkets were 1.8% down in the third quarter of 2009 compared to the same period in 2008 while other retailers boosted their sales 3.0% may indicate more selective buying by cash-strapped drivers."
