2009 expected to be bumper year for sales
By Elliot Wright, 24th December 2009
High street stores looking to boost their festive takings are
starting their sales as early as Christmas Eve this year.
With concerns about the bad weather keeping people away from the
shops, stores are already launching online sales and slashing
prices by up to 70%.
It is estimated that some 4.3m people will be logging on to the
web to hunt for bargains on Christmas day, with a record £120m
expected to be spent.
Among retailers giving web-based bargain hunters a head start
are John Lewis, Currys, Argos, Marks and Spencer, Tesco, Sainsbury
and Debenhams.
Debenhams' and Sainsbury's sales have already begun, with
Currys' and Tesco's commencing at 6pm and 8pm tonight
respectively.

Argos and Marks and Spencer launch their sales tomorrow.
While Boxing Day is expected to be a bumper day for retailers
with some stores opening their doors at 7am. Last Boxing Day saw
12.6% more shoppers than the previous year's, and analysts are
predicting that this year's will be the busiest shopping day of
2009.
Jonathon de Mello of Experian said: "There is a growing
readiness for the consumer to shop on what used to be a day of
rest. The web will be the first place shoppers who want a bargain
will look."
The British Retail Consortium insisted most retailers have been
doing well despite the bad weather. Director General Stephen
Robertson added: "Weak consumer demand and rising unemployment are
at the heart of concerns about how the recovery will pan out."
