Boiler scrappage scheme launched by government

Scheme expected to reduce energy bills and cut carbon

By Elliot Wright, 5th January 2010

Thousands of Britons are expected to save money on energy bills and cut carbon by taking advantage of the government's newly-launched boiler scrappage scheme.

From today, up to 125,000 households in England with working "G-rated" boilers will be entitled to scrap their old equipment and get £400 off the price of a new, modern "A-rated" boiler or a 'greener' heating system like a biomass boiler or a heat pump.

Householders wanting to take advantage of the scheme must apply through the Energy Saving Trust which will provide them with a money-off voucher.

Households taking advantage of the boiler scrappage scheme will save around £200 off heating bills per year

The boiler scrappage scheme has already kick started competition among the heating industry. British Gas is set to double the government's offer and give households £800 off a new boiler while Npower is also launching its own scheme. This is good news for consumers as it extends the scheme to more people and provides them with more choice when applying for a boiler upgrade.

Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband predicts that households taking advantage of the boiler scrappage scheme will save around £200 off heating bills per year and the total carbon saved will be the equivalent of taking around 45,000 cars off the road.

Mr Miliband added: "The Scheme will add to the existing package of Government measures to help householders be smarter about the energy they use, leading to permanently reduced fuel bills and cutting emissions."

The Government's Boiler Scrappage Scheme will:

  • Help sustain work for the 130,000 installers and over 25 UK-based boiler manufacturers throughout the economic recovery.
  • Save money. A household's energy bill could be cut by between £200 to £235 a year.
  • Save carbon. Replacing 125,000 G rated boilers should save in the region of 140,000 tonnes of CO2 per year - equivalent to taking 45,000 cars off the road
