How to complain to building firms

What to do if a building firm carried out your shoddy building work

If it wasn't a cowboy builder that did a bad job on your home but a building company, then it may be somewhat easier to rectify the problem as the company should have a complaints procedure in place.

Building companies that belong to the National Federation of Builders, House Builders Federation and the Construction Confederation, are all part of the "considerate construction scheme" which is designed to reduce disruption caused by construction.

Other building federations/associations will also carry guarantees of some description which provide the consumer with a complaint procedure and assurance against shoddy workmanship, for example the Federation of Master Builders.

Firstly, before you make your complaint, you should have a very clear idea about what you deem to be the defect and how and what you expect to be done to rectify it.

Gather evidence to support your claim. It is a good idea to take photographs of the defects.

Once you have collated your complaint, direct it to the construction builders in question, preferably the foreman.

If your complaint is not acted upon or no improvements are made to the building work, then escalate your complaint to someone more senior at the company such as a manager at the head office.

If your complaint remains unresolved then you should seek advice from your local Trading Standards office or Citizens' Advice Bureau. They will give free advice and may take up your complaint for you.

"I just had to put pen to paper and write to say I'm more than delighted with my settlement that you won me back from my PPI I had with Lloyds TSB. The Claim Forms were simple to fill in. It was a breeze"
