Council tax, like gravity or mothers-in-law, is something most
people live their whole lives without ever questioning.
The usual practice is to get your bill through, narrowly
avoid kicking the cat when you see how much more you're paying this
year than last year, set up a direct debit, and then try not to
think about it again for 12 months.
The majority of people don't stop to think about why they are
paying these sometimes astronomical amounts. A little delve into
early 1990s history tells us many of the valuations that council
taxes are based on were made by council officers and estate agents
who cruised down streets estimating how much each house was worth
purely based on how many windows it had. That is not what anyone
would call an exact science, and we are still paying for it
today.
Amazingly, nearly 20 years later, no government since has
bothered to re-evaluate (except in lucky Wales) those imprecise
1991 readings.
However, some people have decided to do something about this
situation themselves, and thousands are following suit. Through
council tax re-banding, households are claiming rebates of £1000s
and saving on future bills.
It's relatively easy to find out if you should be on a lower
band than you are currently on. If you do discover that you are
paying more than you should then arrange a reassessment with
your local council immediately. They'll put you on the lower band
and give you a rebate for EVERY year you've been paying over the
odds.

re-banding will tell you all you need to know about getting
reassessed and claiming a hefty rebate.
